here is a marvellous set from a great dj from the UK who is such a talented guy and also a wonderful person
i'd like to introduce to you Owen Rolfe From a background of playing live music, and recording with a rock band in the 90’s Owen came to DJ’ing. Living in Devon and increasingly knocking around with some unsavoury characters who dragged him off clubbing all over the country, the love of house and techno music coupled with a musician’s desire to create and perform drew him inexorably to those decks! Having been DJing since 2001, he has played at numerous events around the UK and abroad including residencies at ‘Spoiled’ in Amsterdam and ‘Manna’, the underground house and techno party in Bristol. During the summer he can be found hosting his ‘Coalesce’ nights @ Marisco in Woollacombe near his home town of Barnstaple. His sets are defined by a love of that driving tribal beat, coupled with a real passion for giving pleasure to those on the dancefloor. As you would expect from a musician, his influences are many and varied, but Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin and Carl Cox are pre-eminent. Indeed, like Richie Hawtin, Owen now uses ‘Ableton Live’ which enables him to combine his usual live sets with studio production techniques giving the ability to create re-mixes live and improvised. 2nd Hand “This mix was put together in January 2008. It’s name comes from the fact that the tracks have been well used in sets throughout 2007; they’re definitely not new! I like to do a mix like this at least once a year to capture all my favourite tunes, the ones that have stood out & stood the test of time. I’ve mixed it in Ableton, using its editing features to match the track dynamics which help them sit together on some of the longer mixes or, as with Ame’s Rej (what a tune!), I’ve looped it around and layered it over the tunes either side of it. Also, most of the tracks have been pitch shifted so that they are key-matched to some degree. This is a feature I really love about Ableton and enables me to really layer up the mixes in a way that would be impossible with CD’s or vinyl. There are also a few percussion loops added here and there through the mix which is something I really like to do live as it can add some real excitement. You’ll also hear a weird rhythmic vocal sample which I added in my remix of Jerome Isma-Ae’s Stars In Your Head (Track 13). I took it from Spectrasonics’ Stylus RMX plug-in which is a fantastic bit of software. Again, this has been pitch shifted in Ableton to it sits in key and I love the way synth line in the track changes key at 0:53:01 creating the tension with the vocal. I have fond memories of playing it for the first time live at Manna in Bristol last year; it took the roof off!! Party on!” Owen. [Only registered and activated users can see links.
